Speciesism and Sentientism

چکیده
Many philosophers accept both of the following claims: (1) consciousness matters morally, and (2) species membership does not matter morally. In other words, many reject speciesism but what we might call 'sentientism'. But do reasons against yield analogous sentientism, just as racism sexism are thought to speciesism? This paper argues that is disanalogous sentientism (as well sexism). I make a case for asymmetry: (a) some non-humans clearly have interests, (b) no non-conscious entities interests. asymmetry, argue, renders immune principal argument speciesism.

Souls and Sentientism
I am a psychologist and not a theologian, so I do not know what the word "soul" means. What matters to me is a creature's capacity to feel, to suffer and to be conscious; its sentiency, not its soul, is the bedrock of my concern. Let us proclaim this creed of sentientism: that anything, human or nonhuman, terrestrial or extraterrestrial, natural or man-made, that can suffer should be included w...

Speciesists believe that membership in a particular species is morally relevant. Morally relevant properties entitle their possessors to have their interests considered preferentially relative to those individuals who lack that property. Those dispensing consideration incur obligations or, minimally, options, to act with bias. As a matter of fact, all known speciesists are human speciesists, no...
متن کاملSpeciesism Revisited
Do human non-persons have basic rights simply because they are members of a species characterized by personhood? Are we justified if we give IIDral preference to human non-persons over non-human non-persons with equivalent mental capacities, provided that the latter do not belong to a species characterized by personhood? Michael Wreen has argued for this speciesist view in his recent, important...
